The Major Lakes, Fishing and Cultural Safari

Summary

This is a 14 Days/13 night’s adventure safari that takes you to all major lakes in Kenya. All of them except Lake Victoria are Rift Valley lakes. We begin with Lake Magadi to Lake Elementaita head on to Lake Nakuru, further to Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo, fly to Lake Turkana, back to Lake Victoria and finally Lake Naivasha.

Day 1: Nairobi-Lake Magadi

You will be met by our representative when you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. You will then embark on a 2.5 hours trip down to Lake Magadi. There are several activities that you can participate in including bird watching and climbing Mt. Olorgasalie and a visit to Lake Magadi.

You are expected back in Nairobi in good time and transferred to your hotel for dinner and have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 2: Lake Magadi-Elementaita

After breakfast, you will depart from Nairobi and head to the Rift valley. You will stop at the Rift Valley view point. You will then proceed on your safari to Lake Elementaita where you will check in to your lodge and proceed for sightseeing within. After lunch you will proceed to Soy Sambu Conservancy for a game drive and enjoy other activities. The activities you can participate in are:Filming;horse riding; motor circle safaris; a visit to the local communities.

Lake Elementaita is a protected area due to its birdlife fame and named as one of the heritage sites by UNESCO. The first white settler to this place was Lord Delamare who arrived in 1879. He established Soysambu, a 48,000-acre ranch on the western side of the lake. Delamare gifted the land on the other side of the Lake to his brother-in-law, the honorable Galbraith Lowry Egerton Cole in 1881 and when Egerton died, he was buried here and toDay preserved as the Lake Elementaita Lodge.

The attractions at Lake Elementaita include the ‘Kekopey’ hot springs, in which the Tilapia Graham breed; The red beds nearby are fishing grounds for night herons and pelicans; the Lakeshores are grazed by Zebras, gazelles, elands and families of warthogs; a visit to the Soy Sambu Conservation.

Day 3: Elementaita-Nakuru

You will enjoy your breakfast and enjoy the scenery at the lodge and the surrounding. You will then depart to the next Rift Valley Lake Nakuru. You will arrive in good time to check into the lodge and enjoy the scenery, ambiance and the amenities offered by the lodge.

After lunch you will depart for a game drive that will take you round the lake, the makalia falls, the view point as you enjoy bird watching and seeing animals such as the Rhinos, Buffaloes among other attractions.

Lake Nakuru is one of the gems in the Rift Valley Lakes often referred as the Pink Lake for its great masses of pink flamingos. It is an opportunity to see millions of flamingos besides thousands of other birds. Lake Nakuru is also a Rhino Sanctuary and harbors other wild-game like the Lion, Waterbucks, Buffalo, Warthog, and Hippo among others.

You are expected back to the hotel in good time for dinner and have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru-Lake Bogoria

On this Day after enjoying our breakfast, we depart for a 3 hours safari that takes us to the healing place of Lake Bogoria National reserve. You are expected to arrive in good time for lunch and later take a walk to the Lake as you enjoy the scenery and the attractions around and visit the local communities.

Lake Bogoria is a shallow soda lake set amidst beautiful scenery. Like the other Kenyan soda lakes, it has no outlet and the intense evaporation leads to high levels of salt and minerals, which flamingos love and from a distance the surface of the water appears bright pink. Next to the lake are steaming hot springs and geysers, but don't be tempted to put your hands into the water if you are at all fond of your skin! The vapor from the hot springs is believed to be medicinal. You can carry a raw egg and boil it at the hot springs and eat.

You are expected back to the lodge to enjoy the facilities of the lodge like the naturally heated swimming pool at the lodge;you will then have dinner and have the rest on the evening at the leisure.

Day 5: Bogoria-Baringo

You will enjoy your breakfast as you enjoy the beauty of Bogoria. We will then embark on to our tour van and drive on to Lake Baringo. We will visit the local Njemps communities and later go the shores and take a boat for game viewing as you head to your camp that is at the center of the lake.

We are expected in good time for lunch and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

Lake Baringo is semi-fresh lake and is a birding hotspot. It plays host to photographers given the openness of the habitat and the proximity of wildlife especially by boat along the shores. You can take boat rides which is a great way to view the attractions.

You are expected to arrive at the lodge in good time for dinner and have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 6: Baringo-Elda Maravine -Sobak

We depart the island on time for our boat transfer to the shore where we will meet our driver guides and embark on our journey to a small town called Eldama Ravine. On arrival you will check in your hotel, have lunch and later take a guided walk and visit to the local people.

Day 7: Elda Maravine-Lake Turkana

After breakfast, we will take a 2 hours’ drive journey to Eldoret International Airport for an hours’ local flight to Lodwar Air strip in Turkana the home for the Jade Sea otherwise referred to as Lake Turkana.

On at the airstrip, you will be met by our representative and drive to Lobolo Camp on the shores of Lake Turkana. You will have lunch then the rest of the afternoon at leisure enjoying the scenery.

Day 8: Lobolo Camp-Sibiloi National Park

After breakfast, we will depart by boat for approximately 4hours to Sibiloi National Park. We will enjoy what the park has to offer including the Koobi Fora museum, where you can see fossils that include: the fossils of a big-tusked behemoth of a predecessor of toDay’s Elephant; giant tortoise; fish sites. Terrestrial wildlife includes zebras, Grant gazelles, lions, leopards, stripped hyenas, Beisa Oryx, greater kudu, cheetahs and northern topi among others

Expected in good time at the banda for dinner and have the rest of the evenings at leisure.

Day 9: Sibiloi National Park-Central Island National Reserve-Lobolo

ToDay after breakfast, we will depart by boat for approximately 2 hours to the Gem of Lake Turkanareferred to as the Central Island National Park. This park was gazette as a UNESCO – world heritage site. On arrival, we will walk up to Flamingo Lake, then to the crocodile lake and finally to the Tilapia Lake.

The central Island National park is located at the middle of Lake Turkana. There are three crater lakes on this Island namely:- Crocodile Lake which provide breeding grounds for the world’s largest concentration of Nile crocodiles; Flamingo Lake which provides breeding ground for the flamingoes and other birds and Tilapia Lake Crocodile Kingdom.

Other attractions in the Park include: The world’s largest crocodile nursery, Venomous reptiles and prehistoric fish, Turkana is home to some of the world’s most venomous reptiles, including saw-scaled viper, night and puff adder and cobra. There are also many species of fish including huge Nile perch and large tilapia. Puffer fish, a group normally found in seawater, indicate Turkana’s prehistoric connection to the Red Sea; Abundant birdlife The islands are home to a profusion of birdlife, including 34 species of European migrants most spectacularly viewed as they return home between March and May. At least 23 species breed here, including Goliath heron, and African skimmer, while African open-billed stork, Duck and Gulls feed on the shores and the volcanic island lakes attract lesser flamingos.

We will later board our boat and head back to the camp at the shores of Lake Turkana where we are expected to arrive in good time for dinner and enjoy Turkana cultural dance.

Day 10: Lake Turkana-Lake Victoria

On this Day, after breakfast you will be transferred to the air strip for your flight back to Eldoret. On arrival you will be met by representative and take a 3 hours’ drive to Kenya’s third largest city of Kisumu which is the home of the Lake Victoria. On arrival, you will check in to your hotel and have the rest of the Day at leisure.

Originally Port Florence, it was later named Kisumu, which is a Luo word Sumo meaning butter Trade. In 2001 Kisumu was elevated to a city, becoming third City in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. In 2006 it was declared by the UN as the first millennium city. It is a clear indication that Kisumu has grown from a stopover city to a great tourist destination.

Day 11: Lake Victoria

Today you will enjoy your breakfast as you enjoy the ambiance and the scenery of Kisumu. You will later depart for a full day tour of the city. This tour will take you to the Impala sanctuary, the Lake Victoria, the hippo point and Dunga beach and the mall where you will have your lunch. You will also get to enjoy the luo culture and their songs and dance.

You are expected back to the hotel in good time for dinner and have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 12: Lake Victoria

This is a free day for you to enjoy your stay at the lake city. You can choose to stay at the hotel enjoying their facility or go out to and experience the city or take a boat safari for fishing on lake Victoria.

Day 13: Lake Victoria-Lake Naivasha

On this day, armed with your packed lunch, we will depart for a 5 hours journey, making our way back to the capital, Nairobi but through a different route. Before we complete our safari, we have one more lake to visit. Our safari therefore breaks at Lake Naivasha.

On arrival you will check in to your rooms and later go to the lake to just enjoy the scenery or even take a boat ride into the Lake Naivasha or enjoy other activities within the lake.

Day 14: Naivasha-Nairobi

It is a great day yet sad as we are coming closer and closer to the end of our safari. After breakfast, we embark on our tour van and now make our way into the capital city. You will be transferred to the airport for your flight back home.
