Unaccompanied minor ‘UM’

Did you know that your child can travel on his/her own? Well, in the travel industry we refer to this child as an unaccompanied minor decoded as ‘UM’ generally defined as a child who is travelling alone without a parent, guardian or responsible adult.

To book a flight for an unaccompanied minor, the age limit and other terms and conditions vary from one airline to the other. Some airlines like The Sky team members’ Kenya Airways, KLM and Delta airlines UM age is between 5 years and 14 years while Ethiopian airlines, Lufthansa, Turkish airlines, Swiss air and south African airways of the Star alliance, the UM age is between 5 years and 11 years. Emirates airlines are between 5 years to 11 years while Qatar airways are between 5 years and 15 years.

With the age brackets mentioned, if you have an under 18 years travelling on their own, or you are travelling with a minor but in different cabins, like parent in business class and child in economy class, you can request for the same services which again vary from airline to airline.
