Onboard, a special delivery; <strong>17 rare mountain bongos<\/strong> returning home from Florida, USA. Endemic to Kenya, the mountain bongo, a majestic antelope with a bright chestnut-red colour and striking narrow white stripes, is one of Africa\u2019s most endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The antelopes are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cm2ne8zz3pdo\">third-generation bongos<\/a> taken from Kenya in the 1960s. In what marked a monumental moment for Kenya\u2019s conservation efforts, this batch of bongos is now the second of several more similar repatriations expected in the near future. The first successful repatriation happened in 2004 when 18 mountain bongos were flown back and gradually reintegrated into their natural habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An endangered species<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/bongo-2437869_1280-1024x826.jpg\" alt=\"Mountain Bongo\" class=\"wp-image-1028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/bongo-2437869_1280-1024x826.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/bongo-2437869_1280-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/bongo-2437869_1280-768x619.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/bongo-2437869_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While receiving these beautiful herbivores at the JKIA, Kenya\u2019s Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, noted that the mountain bongo, a species originally found only in Kenya, had suffered untold grief over the decades, with its numbers dwindling to alarming lows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once abundant in Kenya\u2019s montane (high-altitude) forests, habitat loss, poaching, and disease have pushed their numbers to near extinction. Presently, fewer than 100 individuals remain in the wild, primarily in the Aberdare, Mount Kenya, and Eburu forests. Globally, their numbers are equally low and shrinking, with data showing more bongos living in captivity than in the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kenya\u2019s conservation efforts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Kenyan conservationists, in collaboration with international partners, have worked tirelessly to develop strategies to revive the species. The return of these 17 mountain bongos, born and bred in conservation facilities in the U.S., is a beacon of hope for their ultimate survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The journey home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/eastern-bongo-7527476_1280-1024x611.jpg\" alt=\"Mountain Bongo\" class=\"wp-image-1029\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/eastern-bongo-7527476_1280-1024x611.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/eastern-bongo-7527476_1280-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/eastern-bongo-7527476_1280-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kendiritasafaris.co.ke\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/eastern-bongo-7527476_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The bongos were carefully transported from Florida to Kenya, undergoing months of preparation to ensure they adapted smoothly to their new environment. Upon arrival, they were introduced to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountkenyawildlifeconservancy.org\/news\/mount-kenya-wildlife-conservancy-releases-10-adult-mountain-bongos-into-the-mawingu-sanctuary\">Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary<\/a>, a haven established specifically for their rehabilitation and eventual rewilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sanctuary is part of a broader initiative led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kws.go.ke\/\">Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)<\/a>, the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, and other stakeholders, aimed at breeding and reintroducing bongos into the wild. This project aligns with Kenya\u2019s long-term conservation strategy, reinforcing its reputation as a champion for endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A hopeful future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the 17 bongos now settling into their ancestral homeland, conservationists are hopeful for the species&#8217; revival. Kenya has set an ambitious goal\u2014to grow and rewild the mountain bongo population to 750 over the next 50 years.
